As part of celebrations of PK Das Institute of Medical Sciences completing ten years of volunteer service, nominations can be made till November 26 for the 'PK Das Best Doctors Award' instituted in memory of Nehru Group of Institutions Founder Chairman PK Das. Name of doctors working in Kerala should be suggested.
There are six awards in four categories namely overall contribution to the field of medicine, medical education, clinical practice and social service. Nominations can be made by doctors directly or by well-wishers through PK Das Institute of Medical Sciences website, google link below or by email. The award is Rs 1,00,000 and a certificate for overall contribution and Rs 50,000 and a certificate for the other three categories.
PK Das Best Doctor Award was introduced to honor the talented, experienced and service minded doctors of Kerala. While the majority of doctors in Kerala deserve any award according to any criteria, this award is to honor the representatives selected from among them," said Dr. P. Krishnadas.
At a time when higher education was concentrated in big cities, PK Das chose Kuniyamuthur, a village in Coimbatore to provide higher education to the economically disadvantaged. While Nehru continued to lead the Group of Institutions, his sons Adv. Dr. P. Krishnadas, Dr. P.Krishna Kumar and were trained on how to fulfill the comprehensive changes required in the field of education and the responsibility towards the society. PK Das led constant changes in the field of education through the Nehru Group of Institutions until he left Karma Mandal in 2009.
After 54 years, the Nehru Group of Institutions has grown into 20 Olam colleges in Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the fields of Aeronautical, Architecture, Arts, Engineering, Science, Medical, Research and Technical. Dr.P.Krishnadas, Dr.P.Krishna Kumar and Dr.P Tulasi are leading the philanthropic activities started by PK Das. During the 2017-2018 floods in Kerala, the Nehru Group's institutions set up relief camps to provide accommodation, food and clothing to the affected. The teachers, students and staff of the Nehru Group of Institutions cleaned houses in Alappuzha, which suffered the worst from the floods.
Through the assistance scheme 'Snehasparsham', more than 300 economically disadvantaged patients are given financial assistance every month. Houses were built for free for the homeless. Wheelchairs and three-wheelers for the differently-abled and tailoring machines for self-employment for women are part of the Nehru Group's social welfare schemes. During the Covid period, he helped the local governments by setting up 'Covid First Line Treatment Centers' (CFLTC) in all the institutions of the Nehru Group of Institutions.
