Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the first to raise and implement the revolutionary idea of free education for all students up to the age of 14 in India. His ideal was that girls should get education. He was the Education Minister of India from 15 August 1947 to 2 February 1958. A revolutionary who gave direction to the education sector of independent India. November 11 is his birthday. As per the call of the Ministry of Manpower, today is being observed as National Education Day in memory of Azad.
The first call was made in 2008 to observe November 11 as Education Day. Since then, every November 11, the country honors Azad's memory and pays tribute to him through progress in the field of education. Azad was a freedom fighter. He was a writer and one of the senior leaders of the Indian National Congress. After independence, he became the first Minister of Education and led the country on the path of development.
Primary education was not the only goal of Azad. He understood the importance of vocational education. The first steps were taken. He also wanted the country to progress in the field of technical education. Azad opined that the best way to eradicate poverty is for everyone to get an education. It was firmly believed that once illiteracy was eradicated, the country would progress with letters and knowledge. He was of the view that if the quality of education is better, the country has nothing to fear.
University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education are Azad's contributions. He also contributed significantly to the establishment of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Sahitya Akademi, Lalitha Kala Akademi, Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
National Education Day has a different theme every year. The theme this year is 'Changing Ways, Changing Education'. Through this, the aim is to create awareness about the changes that need to be made in the education system. This year's emphasis is on contemporary education.
Every Education Day is commemorated to empower the under-educated as well as organize seminars, classes and symposiums in educational institutions across the country. Azad's ideals can only be implemented by bringing forward those who are yet to reach the mainstream of society, who are suffering from poverty and suffering. The nation is being asked today to pledge and dedicate itself to it.
